If you’re looking for your first or next practice, physician career fairs can be a great way to gather information about opportunities and to make connections with organizations that are hiring. Walk into a career fair without a game plan, however, and you may see only a blur of tablecloths and business cards.
So what must you do to be prepared? Beyond looking professional and bringing your CV, here are a few tips to get you ready:
1. Research the participating organizations.
The hospitals, practices and medical groups that are participating in a physician career fair are often listed on the fair’s website. If you cannot find them, email the fair organizer for a complete list. Do some preliminary research online to see which of these organizations interest you most. Check out PracticeLink.com and their corporate websites to see which positions they have open, and make a list of the organizations whose representatives you want to speak with at the fair.
2. Practice your elevator speech.
What’s your specialty? Where did you go to medical school? Where are you completing your residency? What type of practice are you looking for? What is important to you professionally? Each recruiter or representative will have the same questions for you. Write down a paragraph or two that sums up who you are, what you’ve done so far and what you’re looking for next, and practice it out loud.
3. Ask the right questions.
If you’ve done preliminary research, you’ll know which positions and organizations interest you most. Approach their representatives to gather more information. Ask about each organization and its patients, the opportunity and what it entails, and even the nature of the community and culture. Feel free to write down your questions ahead of time and to take notes as you gather answers. This will show that you’re truly interested and doing your homework.
4. Attend the workshops.
Check out the workshop lineup ahead of time, and plan to attend the sessions that most interest you. These workshops often provide the kind of valuable career insights that are relevant to physicians but aren’t taught in medical school or residency. Additionally, workshops provide an extra opportunity for you to meet and network with those attending the fair.
5. Network network network.
Meet recruiters, make referrals and build personal connections with other attendees. Even if you don’t find the position you’re looking for, one of your new contacts may be able to put you in touch with an organization that does have the right opportunity. Meeting and chatting with recruiters also serves as great practice for job interviews and site visits.
6. Follow up with those you meet.
Use your notes from conversations and workshops to make a list of the recruiters or other participants with whom you want to keep in touch after the fair. Send an email, a thank you note or a LinkedIn invitation to maintain the connection, continue the conversation and stay top-of-mind for your new contacts.
